I WENT OUT JUST TO look and see what they had in the showroom; I came home with a 1979 CB750F Honda. It was 15,000 smaller than the Kaw, but I put 38,000 good road trip miles on it. In 1982, I rode my first long-distance trip. I went to Nova Scotia with a friend CW who was riding a 550cc Honda.
CW and I did the trip in four days. The trip until today is still a blur. We left Willingboro, New Jersey, around 3:30 p.m. We ran into traffic in New York going across the George Washington Bridge. We rode straight through the night to Bar, Harbor Maine. CW’s bike broke down in Connecticut.
The Ferry to Nova Scotia pulled out at 8:00 or 9:00 a.m. from Bar Harbor. We arrived about two hours before the boat launched. I was so tired I don’t remember the boat ride to Nova Scotia.
Once in Nova Scotia, we rode from Yarmouth to Dartmouth. The roads were like glass, and there was only one traffic light that I can remember.
We were going to go through a national park until we saw a sign that read Watch For Bears. We made a U-turn and headed back to Yarmouth. It seemed like we rode around the block, and we were back on the boat.
I had the biggest lobster I had ever seen on my plate. It was too big for the plate. I think the dinner cost $11.99. So?
The ride back home was the same as going there – nonstop. We stopped only for gas. This trip stood out in my mind because it rained from the time we got off the boat in Maine until we got back to Willingboro, New Jersey. I must have poured six ounces of water from each boot. I learned another lesson. Buy a good rain suit.
